Trader Resources : Futures Markets Basics : Trading Room
The trading room is a large room with trading pits, market monitors (regulators and reporters) around the pits, and phone clerks around the perimeter of the room to take orders.
The trading pits are typically polygonal with steps leading down to center. The center is usually reserved for current and the most active contracts. Steps along each side of the polygon separate contract months.
The trading hours in the trading room are limited and depend on commodity. The trading hours for each contract can be found in the contract specs.
The trading bell begins and ends each trading day. It also provides a warning prior to opening and closing.
